1 dies when car hits couch, then van

ORANGE – A 30-year-old man from Santa Ana is dead after a Toyota Corolla slammed into a couch in the fast lane and crashed with a GMC van on the southbound I-5 freeway Sunday night.

The crash occurred at 9:29 p.m. north of La Veta Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said.

According to the CHP, this is how the crash occurred:
Ryo Kosuge, 20, from Irvine was traveling in the fast lane at about 65 mph in a 2000 Toyota Corolla when he saw a black couch blocking the lane.

Kosuge hit the brakes but was unable to avoid slamming into the couch. The impact caused Kosuge to lose control of the Corolla and crashed into the left rear of a 2000 GMC Safari, causing the driver of the GMC to lose control.

The GMC traveled southwest and overturned. The middle rear passenger was ejected and was pronounced dead by the Orange County Fire Authority.

It is unknown if the couch was the primary cause of the crash, CHP officer Denise Quesada said.

The owner of the couch has not been found and the crash is under investigation, Quesada said.
