Car Hits, Kills Man Who Jumped Out of Moving Ambulance

A psychiatric patient was fatally injured when a car hit him after he jumped out of a private ambulance on the southbound Hollywood (101) Freeway near Universal City, authorities said Wednesday.

The man was being transported to a medical facility about 11 p.m. Tuesday when he jumped out of the moving ambulance north of Barham Boulevard and was hit by a 2007 Volvo driven by a 41-year-old Van Nuys man, according to the California Highway Patrol’s preliminary report.

A Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance transported the 45-year-old patient to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where he died, the CHP reported. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the Volvo driver, who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Anyone with more information about the accident was urged to call the CHP’s Central Area office at 213-744-2331.
