ANAHEIM – A man suspected of driving drunk was arrested after police say he struck and killed a man who was crossing Rio Vista Street on Thursday evening.

The 59-year-old man was driving a white Ford Econoline van southbound in the No. 1 lane of Rio Vista when he struck Everardo Tapia, 58, who was crossing the road 30 feet to 40 feet from Hempstead Street about 5:30 p.m., Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez said.

Tapia was crossing a portion of Rio Vista bordered by a shopping center on one side and an apartment complex on the other, Martinez said, although it wasn’t initially clear which direction he was heading.

Tapia, an Anaheim resident, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 6:45 p.m.

The driver was arrested at the scene of the crash after failing a field-sobriety test, Martinez said. Authorities have not yet released his name.

Investigators have not found witnesses to the collision, Martinez said.

Authorities have closed Rio Vista between Hempstead and Lincoln Avenue until at least 8 p.m. as they go over the scene.
