Driver crashes into fire hydrant, trees

FULLERTON – A 23-year-old man who was apparently driving under the influence was arrested this morning after he crashed into a fire hydrant, struck several trees and left his passenger injured, police said.

The crash was reported shortly before 1 a.m. today at Brea Boulevard and Longview Drive, said Fullerton police Sgt. Andrew Goodrich. The 1991 red two-door Nissan was traveling north on Brea when it sheared off the fire hydrant, he said.

The driver, Joseph Patronas, of Placentia was booked at the Fullerton City Jail on suspicion of felony DUI. He was bailed out this morning, Goodrich said.

His 28-year-old passenger from La Habra was taken to a hospital suffering from moderate to serious injuries, Goodrich said.

A friend who was following the Nissan told officers they left a bar shortly before the accident occurred, Goodrich said.
