A 47-year-old Oxnard man died early this morning, four days after he was critically injured when his pickup truck crossed into opposing traffic and struck another vehicle head-on near Camarillo, authorities said.

Giovonni Costanza was pronounced dead at 2:49 a.m. at Ventura County Medical Center, said Shasta Gainer, a deputy Ventura County Medical Examiner. Costanza died from complications of blunt force chest and abdominal injuries, Gainer said.

Costanza was driving east on Pleasant Valley Road just east of Wood Road about 12:20 p.m. Nov. 4 when he crossed into westbound traffic and struck a pickup driven by Joel Ambriz, 63, of Oxnard, the California Highway Patrol reported at the time.

Both Costanza and Ambriz were critically injured and trapped in their vehicles. After they were extricated by firefighters, Costanza was airlifted to Ventura County Medical Center and Ambriz was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Ambriz suffered two broken legs and internal injuries in the crash. His 17-year-old passenger had minor injuries.

All of the people involved in the collision were wearing seat belts, officials said.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation this week.
