Driver killed in fiery crash, passenger escapes

A 37-year-old Adelanto motorist was killed and his passenger narrowly escaped injury yesterday during a car crash in that High Desert city, according to San Bernardino County coroner’s investigators and deputy sheriffs.

Robert K. Hamilton Jr. died at the scene of the 12:25 a.m. wreck Sunday near Jonathan and Star Streets.

The 1986 Chevy Monte Carlo was traveling north on Jonathan Street when it went out of control and rolled onto its top, deputies said in a written statement.

“The passenger, 32-year-old Rick Batiste of Adelanto, managed to get out of the vehicle before it caught on fire,” according to the statement. “Hamilton did not make it out of the car as the fire quickly spread through the interior.”
