Elderly couple dead after a fire at Mission Hills home

An elderly man and woman were fatally injured a house fire in Mission Hills, authorities said today.
Alfred Rivas, 82, and his wife Carmen Rivas, 79, died at a hospital, said Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the coroner’s office.

The fire in the single-story home at 10600 North Halbrent Avenue was reported at 10:18 p.m. Wednesday and was extinguished in about 10 minutes, Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. Damage was estimated at $150,000, Scott said. The house was not equipped with smoke alarms, Scott said.
