SANTA ANA – A former Orange County Sheriff’s deputy accused of illegally importing Japanese racing cars, including one used in a “Fast and Furious” film, faces a year in prison after agreeing to plead guilty to a misdemeanor in the case.

Daryl R. Alison, 45, of San Clemente is accused of illegally importing disassembled Nissan Skyline vehicles and then would reassemble the parts into cars at his now-defunct Costa Mesa business, Kaizo Industries, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Last July, federal and state investigators seized a dozen vehicles, including the ”hero” car used in the fourth installment of the “Fast and Furious” series, during the probe, according to ICE. The cars have an estimated value of more than $450,000.

“He’d bring the cars to his warehouse, put the cars together, and then put fake VIN numbers on the cars,” said Joe O’Donnell, acting assistant special agent in charge for ICE Homeland Security Investigations in Orange County.

Such exotic Japanese cars are generally not allowed in the United States, unless they are modified and meet both Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation standards, he added.

Alison agreed to plead guilty last month to a misdemeanor charge of removing a data plate of one Nissan that showed Japan was the country of origin, court records show. Besides the maximum penalty of a year in prison, he also could be sentenced to a year of supervised release and a $100,000 fine, according to the plea agreement.

Alison is scheduled to appear before U.S. District Judge Andrew Guilford on Nov. 16, said his attorney, Kate Corrigan.
Corrigan said her client is “looking forward at getting this behind him in a most expeditious and efficient manner.”
