Father beaten into coma on his way to buy ice cream for kids

“San Juan Capistrano man remains in extremely critical condition while authorities search for attacker.”

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – A father of two on his way to get some ice cream for his children Tuesday night was beaten into a coma in an alley near his home. Authorities have no motive for the brutal attack.
The father had just a few dollars in his pocket when he left his 4-year-old and 8-year-old with his wife around 6:40 p.m. to buy some ice cream around the corner from their home, said Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino. Minutes later, the man’s wife heard sirens.
She came out to find her husband severely beaten and lying in a pool of blood in an alley behind the 26500 block of Calle Santa Barbara. Paramedics took the man to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where he remains in extremely critical condition, Amormino said.
It was still light out when the beating happened, and authorities believe someone may have heard or seen something. The man is a “family man,” Amormino said, with no criminal history.
“We don’t know who assaulted him or for what,” Amormino said. “But we want to know why.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 1-866-TIP-OCSD.
