RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA – A report of a smoke-filled locker room prompted firefighters to respond to a middle school Tuesday morning, but no fire was found, authorities said.

Orange County Fire Authority officials responded to Rancho Santa Margarita Intermediate School, 21931 Alma Aldea, after receiving a call that a locker room in the school was filling up with smoke, said Capt. Greg McKeown.

The call was received at 7:21 a.m.

Firefighters looked for the fire but found no flames, McKeown said.
Officials believe the smoke may have instead been dust built up in the school’s heating system, which may have been spread inside the locker room when the system was turned on.

“Sometimes, when you haven’t used your heating system in a long time, you have a lot of dust build up,” McKeown said.
