Crash leaves 2 dead
Two drivers were killed Saturday night when a 91-year-old woman driving on state Highway 79 in San Jacinto veered into oncoming traffic, hitting a pickup truck driving in the opposite direction.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, the Riverside coroner’s office said. They were the 91-year-old woman from Beaumont and Julia Chang Wen, 38, of San Diego. The coroner’s office was trying to find the Beaumont woman’s next of kin before releasing her name.
The accident happened shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, about 1.5 miles north of Gilman Springs Road. The women were pronounced dead about 20 minutes later.
It was not immediately clear what caused the Beaumont woman’s sports coupe to drift into opposing lanes of traffic. California Highway Patrol was investigating.
