Mother, Infant Killed When SUV Crashes Into Home

A young mother and her baby were killed when the father of the child crashed an SUV into a house late Sunday, a fire department official said.

The SUV struck the house on the 400 block of Mott Street so hard it went five to six feet inside, Devin Gales of the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The woman was killed, and a baby was fatally injured and died at a hospital, said Sergeant Al Ramos.

Police sad the father, 22, was arrested. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Relatives told the Associated Press that a custody dispute might have prompted the violence. Eduardo Bonilla identified his niece as 19-year-old Trudy Bonilla and her 6-day-old daughter as Naomi Bonilla.

Bonilla told the AP that hours before the crash, the driver threatened to kill his niece and her daughter because she wouldn’t give him custody. Bonilla said the driver and his niece had dated for about 18 months, but broke up about three months ago.

The crash occurred at 11:42 Sunday night, Gales said.

The Building and Safety Department was notified to determine if the family can return to the house.
