Motorist arrested in PCH crash that killed bicyclist

“Bicyclist Roger Michael Lippman, 63, of Huntington Beach dies in accident.”

Police have arrested a motorist suspected in a hit-and-run accident that killed a bicyclist Friday morning on Pacific Coast Highway, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 11:40 a.m. on northbound Pacific Coast Highway, between Seapoint Street and Warner Avenue, Lt. Brian Seitz said.

Bicyclist Roger Michael Lippman, 63, of Huntington Beach was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Joel Alexander Murphy, 27, of Mission Viejo, was arrested and booked on suspicion of three felonies: hit-and-run, driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. Murphy was also arrested on a probation violation.

Witnesses said a silver Hyundai hit Lippman and sustained windshield damage. Seal Beach police later responded to an accident near Westminster Boulevard and Kitts Highway in which a car matched the vehicle description.

The initial investigation revealed Lippman and Murphy were traveling in the northbound lanes of PCH when the crash occurred, Seitz said, but additional details were not immediately available. Murphy did not appear to have rendered aid before fleeing, he said.

The northbound lanes were closed for several hours while traffic investigators went over the scene.
