Victim of fatal Ventura crash identified

Authorities this morning released the name of a 33-year-old Ventura man who was killed Monday afternoon in a solo crash on a Ventura freeway transition.

The victim was identified as Gary Williams, said Armando Chavez, a senior deputy Ventura County medical examiner.

Williams was driving a sport utility vehicle north on Highway 101 approaching the Highway 126 interchange when he lost control, veered right across the transition road, went off the roadway, hit an asphalt berm and flipped down an embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The SUV came to rest on its roof about 50 feet down the embankment. Williams, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters, CHP officials said.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of Williams’ death is scheduled for today.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
