A wrong-way freeway driver was charged Thursday with killing two people when he slammed his Mercedes Benz head on into an unsuspecting driver in approaching traffic.

Anthony Louis Fragoso, 21, of South Gate, faces two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter by unlawful manner of driving with gross negligence with sentencing enhancements for causing great bodily injury.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of nine years in state prison. Orange County prosecutors said Thursday that they will ask that Fragoso be held on $150,000 bail at his arraignment, which will be scheduled later due to his injuries.

Fragoso is accused of driving at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction in the carpool lane of the 91 Freeway in Anaheim near Harbor Boulevard shortly after midnight Wednesday. Numerous witnesses called 911 to report the wrong-way driver.

Fragoso’s Mercedes-Benz sedan crashed head-on into a Toyota Scion, killing driver Alan Reyes, 25, of Diamond Bar, and his passenger Vanessa Cease, 24, of Long Beach. The magnitude of the crash ejected Reyes from his vehicle.

Fragoso was taken to UCI Medical Center for treatment of major traumatic injuries. He will be taken into custody upon his discharge from the hospital, according to a news release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Toxicology reports are pending

All lanes on the eastbound 91 at Harbor were closed for about three hours after the crash.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating this case.
