Coast Guard, Sheriff crews rescue 3 men from boat near Seal Beach

by in News

The Coast Guard and Orange County Sheriff’s Department crews on Saturday night rescued three men from a boat taking on water near Seal Beach.

At about 10 p.m., a worker on a nearby oil platform contacted the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach about an 18-foot recreational boat taking on water with three men aboard, according to a Coast Guard news release.

The worker also threw life jackets to the men.

A Coast Guard crew and an Orange County Sheriff’s Department rescue crew arrived on scene at about 10:16 p.m. The Coast Guard boat crew brought two of the men aboard and the sheriff’s boat crew took the third man.

The boat was towed to the Davies Harbor launch ramp.

There were no reports of injuries.

The Coast Guard urges boaters to wear life jackets and have a VHF radio aboard to monitor safety broadcasts and to contact authorities in the event of an emergency.

It also praised the oil platform worker.

“The prompt notification and action by the employee on the oil platform was vital to this successful interagency rescue,” said Cmdr. Lushan Hannah, Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach chief of response. “Good Samaritans have always played a critical role in assisting us with responding to mariners in distress.”
