Camp Pendleton fire quickly swells, at 1,000 acres

A brushfire broke out Sunday in the central area of Camp Pendleton and quickly spread, and by Sunday night was at 1,000 acres.

Camp Pendleton officials said it was 50 percent contained.

Officials at the sprawling U.S. Marine Corps base tweeted around noon that a three-acre fire had broken out on Wilcox Range. An hour later, they announced the fire had spread to 100 acres. By 3:30 p.m., the acerage had jumped to 600.

It wasn’t clear if any structures were threatened. North County Fire Protection District officials said there was no threat to lands in their jurisdiction area off of the post.

Riverside County firefighters warned the public that smoke could be expected in the Murrieta and Temecula areas.
