A Santa Ana school police officer was taken to a hospital early Tuesday, Sept. 11, after his squad car was rear-ended by a driver who may have been under the influence.

The officer was transported with pain but no major injuries after the 12:40 a.m. crash, Santa Ana police said.

Officers on scene conducted a field-sobriety test on the suspected impaired driver near the crash site, in the 200 block of West First Street. The front end of the man’s Toyota sedan was heavily damaged as was the back of the police vehicle, which was resting in the intersection of First and Sycamore streets.

The man was handcuffed and taken into custody.
