Want to see the can-do efforts of local companies to fight hunger? Check out these Canstruction Orange County structures

by in News

Structures from this year’s Canstruction Orange County design and build competition to benefit the Orange County Food Bank are on display through the end of the month at three locations.

Teams of building industry professionals — architects, construction workers and engineers — from 11 local businesses and corporations put their creative skills to work arranging thousands of canned good products into fun works of art.

The structures will be on display through Sept. 30 at the ARTIC transportation station in Anaheim, John Wayne Airport and South Coast Plaza. Awards have been given out in various categories, but the public can vote on the “People’s Choice Award,” and donate $1 per vote, by going to canstructionoc.org/vote.

The annual event, now in its 11th year, tries to raise awareness and generate donations for the Orange County Food Bank, run by the Community Action Partnership of Orange County.

Food bank director Mark Lowry said once the displays are taken down, some 51,800 cans of food will be sent to the food bank’s Garden Grove facility.

“One of the O.C. Food Bank’s largest challenges is telling the stories of the people who we serve, especially in a community that has a reputation for being affluent,” Lowry said. “Canstruction draws attention to the issue of hunger, in a manner that is visually stunning and incredibly creative.”
