A man who shot at gang officers Monday night in Santa Ana was wounded by police gunfire when they tried to take him into custody.

At around 9 a.m. detectives were working gang enforcement in the 1800 block of South Evergreen Street, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

The two detectives were in a marked vehicle driving northbound in an alley adjaent to Evergreen and near Occidental Street when a suspect came out of a garage, Bertagna said.

“As the officers pass, he fires multiple rounds at the officers who are in their vehicle,” he said.

The officers got out of their vehicle and chased the suspect in the residential neighborhood with apartment complexes.

At some point, there’s a confrontation and a shooting where the suspect is wounded in the upper torso. He was taken to a hospital, with a weapon found at the scene, Bertagna said.

Two other people fleeing from the scene were also detained but their involvement into the incident was still under investigation.

As per protocol, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the incident. So will the Santa Ana Police Department’s internal affairs and homicide units.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident was asked to call homicide detectives at 714-245-8390.
