Fountain Valley – Six people were injured, two critically, when an SUV slammed into a pole early Saturday, police said.

The driver, Alex Nieves, 18, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

A tank of nitrous oxide was found in the vehicle, said Fountain Valley Police Sgt. Jennifer Pratt. It was not immediately known if the substance, commonly known as laughing gas, played a role in the accident, she said.

The crash happened on Harbor Boulevard near Edinger Avenue shortly after midnight. The ages of the occupants in the SUV ranged from 18 to the mid-20s, Pratt said.

“It sounds like most of them were under the influence of a variety of substances,” she said.
