Torrance’s 60th annual weekend celebrating Armed Forces Day kicked off with a little bit of music — actually, a whole lot.

The Navy Band Southwest, one of the Navy’s finest and oldest continuing musical organizations, performed at the annual Armed Forces Day Concert Friday afternoon, May 17, at the James R. Armstrong Theatre.

With more than 90 years in the San Diego community, the band has served as the musical ambassador for the Navy’s Southwest Region. The band, under the direction of Lt. Diane E. Nichols, is made up of 35 members.

This weekend, Torrance will also host its annual parade and a 5-kilometer race; the Del Amo Fashion Center will host military exhibits.
