A man had to be cut out of a U-Haul van early Friday morning, May 31, after it slammed into a pole in Yorba Linda.

When firefighters arrived at Yorba Linda Boulevard and Van Buren Street shortly after the 1:47 a.m. crash, they found the heavily damage van and the driver stuck inside.

He appeared to have broken his legs, said Capt. Chris Stevens of the Orange County Fire Authority.

“In this case, with the U-Haul van, if you look in the back end there’s a grated fence … and he was pinned between the front dash and that fence,” Stevens said. “With the obvious side door being compromised, we decided to come in from the back end.”

Firefighters cut the grated fence dividing the van’s front cab and cargo area to get the man out, which took about 20 minutes, Stevens said.

He was taken to a hospital. His condition wasn’t publicly disclosed.

It was immediately unclear what led to the crash, although firefighters say it would have needed to be significant speed for the type of damage that was seen.
