Garden Grove man charged in Montclair crash that killed 5-year-old, grandparents

by in News

A Garden Grove man has been arrested in connection with the traffic-crash deaths of a Pomona husband and wife and their 5-year-old grandson last weekend in Montclair, police said Thursday, Feb. 13.

Hugo Javier Rodriguez Rios, 32, was in custody at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga after his arrest on suspicion of with three counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs causing injury, Montclair police said.

He was being held in lieu of posting bond on $1 million bail.

Police said the late-Saturday night collision at Howard Street and Ramona Avenue between Rodriguez’s 1995 Ford Explorer and a sedan claimed the lives of Celia Flores Orozco, 67, and her husband, Jose Valdez Orozco, 65, the San Bernardino County Coroner said. The couple was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 5-year-old boy, who authorities have not fully identified, was hospitalized and died Tuesday, police said.

Rodriguez also was hospitalized and was arrested Wednesday immediately after being released from care, police said.

Supervising Deputy Coroner Investigator Gabriel Morales confirmed the Orozcos were married, and said documents showed the 5-year-old boy was their grandson. Celia was driving the sedan.
