by in News

Costa Mesa will be under citywide curfew from 7 p.m. Monday, June 1, until 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The news follows a curfew overnight Sunday that officials called out of caution, as protests were scheduled in several other Orange County cities.

A flyer posted on social media announced a demonstration at South Coast Plaza at 8 p.m. Monday and advised people to “wear protection” and “bring your friends.”

The mall had been expected to reopen Monday after closing in mid-March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Earlier Monday, the mall was being secured, and a large police presence was expected in the evening to discourage vandalism and looting, which have taken place in Long Beach, Santa Monica, San Diego and elsewhere.

The curfew does not apply to people going to and from work, attending religious services and seeking or providing emergency care.

Protests began in Minneapolis after the May 25 death of George Floyd, who was restrained by an officer who held a knee on Floyd’s neck. They have since spread across the country, with many events taking place peacefully but some turning violent and destructive.
