22-year-old bicyclist in coma after being hit by truck

“Bicyclist in coma after crashing with truck in Lake Forest.”

LAKE FOREST – A 22-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured when he was struck by a truck Thursday evening, authorities said.

Officials said the crash is still under investigation but believe the cyclist turned right into the path of the oncoming truck. The rider, identified as Marvin Campos, is also believed to have been drinking before the crash occurred, said Lt. Ted Boyne of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

When deputies arrived, Campos was unconscious, Boyne said.
Details on how the crash occurred were not immediately available, but Campos is believed to have been riding south on Rockfield Boulevard at about 7 p.m. Campos is believed to have then turned right on Larkwood Lane, riding into the path of the Ford F150, Boyne said.
Deputies performed CPR until paramedics arrived, he said. Campos was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where he was placed in a chemically induced coma, Boyne said. His injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Although Campos is believed to have been drinking before the crash, investigators are still looking into whether he was over the legal limit, Boyne said.

Investigators with the sheriff’s Major Accident Reconstruction Team shut down the northbound lanes on Rockfield Boulevard to investigate, Boyne said. Traffic was closed on the northbound side of the street until 11:23 p.m., Boyne said.

No one has been cited or arrested in the crash, Boyne said. The crash is still under investigation.
The name of the driver has not been released.
