Corvette crashes into Infiniti, wetlands

HUNTINGTON BEACH – A Corvette driver who rear-ended an Infinti sedan Tuesday night, sending both cars into the Bolsa Chica wetlands, had to be rescued from his car, and was later arrested, police said.

Melvin Brown, 52, of Garden Grove, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The Infiniti driver – Alfredo Garcia, 29, of Huntington Beach – was taken to the hospital with complaints of pain.

Around 10:15 p.m., Brown was driving his brand-new Chevrolet Corvette west on Pacific Coast Highway, weaving in and out of traffic at around 150 mph, police said.

About a mile south of Wanrer Avenue, the Corvette rear-ended the Infiniti, causing both cars to spin out of control and into the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, police said. Both cars went into the water on the inland side of PCH. The Infinti was partially submerged and the Corvette slipped all the way under water.

Andrew Baggett of Huntington Beach jumped into the water to rescue Brown from his Corvette, police said.

Brown and Garcia were both taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, police said.

Police officers on the scene told a camera crew that the Corvette was a brand-new ZR1; car afficionados have e-mailed the Register to say that it looks like a standard Corvette C6.

Police said the Infiniti was a G35; afficionados have pointed out that it has the tail lights, chrome strip and insignia of a G37.

The ZR1 is the fastest production car ever made by Chevrolet, with 638 horsepower and a top speed of 205 mph; the C6 tops out at 186 mph.
