Driver fatally strikes toddler

A 2-year-old died Sunday after he was struck by a motorist in the 200 block of Rosewood Street in Ventura, police officials said.

According to Ventura police, Luis Contreras was driving westbound on Rosewood Street around 11:45 a.m. when he struck the 2-year-old boy, who lives in the neighborhood. Contreras stopped his truck to help the toddler and drove him and his mother to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital, said Ventura Police Cmdr. Tom Taylor.

Hospital officials called the Ventura Police Department, which is investigating the accident. Contreras volunteered to take a blood test. According to officials, Contreras did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs when he was interviewed by officers.

“So far it looks like an accident, and no one has been charged with anything yet,” Taylor said.

The cause is still under investigation.
