Man arrested in crash that killed 8-year-old

A Trabuco Canyon man was arrested today on suspicion of killing an 8-year-old girl and injuring two others during a high-speed car crash in Lake Forest, prosecutors said.

Soroosh Lee Mehdi, 27, was driving in his BMW sedan at speeds of up to 80 mph on El Toro Road around 5:30 p.m. on May 24 when he struck a sports utility vehicle, driven by 27-year-old Jose Cervantes, prosecutors said.

Cervantes lost control of the Chevrolet, and crashed into a pole. His girlfriend, Magdalena Curiel Topete and her niece, Jasmine Sanchez were passengers, prosecutors said.

Sanchez died immediately. Topete suffered cuts on her face and to her liver, while Cervantes suffered cuts to his face, prosecutors said.

Mehdi is charged with felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence with sentencing enhancements for causing great bodily injury to two victims. He will be arraigned Monday.
