Report: Bike thefts on rise in L.A.

Bicycle thefts are zooming in Los Angeles even as the overall crime rate drops.
Police say nearly 2,000 bikes were stolen last year – up 29 percent from 2008. Authorities believe the total could be even higher because many bike heists go unreported.

Hot spots for thefts include downtown, Venice, parts of Hollywood and the area near the University of Southern California. The bike theft rate in the downtown area was up nearly 60 percent.

Police recently arrested two men they contend ran a ring that stole bicycles downtown and sold them on Craigslist.
