Two killed in crash of military helicopter

“The Cobra attack helicopter went down last night in a remote area of San Diego County.”

ALPINE, Calif. — Authorities say two people were killed in a military helicopter crash in a remote section of the Cleveland National Forest in eastern San Diego County.

Captain Daryll Pina of the California Department of Forestry says the Cobra military attack helicopter crashed late Tuesday night and briefly set off a 1-2 acre wildfire.

Pina says a Defense Department accident investigation team was on the scene this morning. He did not know what branch of the military the helicopter was from, but firefighters received reports from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar that a helicopter with live ordnance was missing.

A spokesman for the air station had no immediate comment.

Pina had no information on the dead, but said they were the only two aboard.
