Bicyclists, pedestrian hurt after chain-reaction crash in San Clemente

by in News

Four people were hospitalized after a speeding pickup truck lost control and collided with four parked vehicles, injuring two bicyclists and a pedestrian in a chain-reaction crash in San Clemente on Sunday, Aug. 12.

One person was airlifted and three others transported via ambulance to hospitals following the crash that occurred at the 700 block of Camino de Los Mares, between Calle Nuevo and Avenida Vaquero.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department authorities said a 2016 Dodge pickup truck was moving eastbound at a high rate of speed when it struck a curb and went through a median separating the high traffic zone of Camino de Los Mares from the residential portion of the street.

The vehicle hit a pole before slamming into four parked vehicles, sending one car crashing into two bicyclists and forcing another car to strike a pedestrian.

They and the driver, described as a male in his 30s, were being treated at Mission Hospital and UC Irvine Medical Center following the collision. Officials didn’t immediately announce any arrests after the crash, which was under investigation.

Traffic was closed on Camino de Los Mares following the crash between Avenida Vaquero and Calle Nuevo. That road closure was expected to remain in effect until midnight.
