ORANGE COUNTY — A flight instructor and a student were slightly injured Monday when a helicopter crashed shortly after takeoff at John Wayne Airport.

The crash took place at 3:36 p.m., according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Tony Bommarito and John Wayne Airport spokeswoman Deanne Thompson.

Both people were treated at the scene but refused transport to a hospital, Bommarito and Thompson said.

No other injuries were reported.

There’s no word yet on why the helicopter crashed.

The crash debris was being removed from the runway, Thompson said, adding there was no disruption in airline services.

The crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, Thompson added.
