Curt Seeden: Looking for a way to become more involved in the Fountain Valley community?

by in News

Over the past 20 years, I have found great satisfaction in volunteerism.

I understand that we are all busy with work, families and other responsibilities. However, if you’d like to get more involved in your community, particularly in the civic arena, the city of Fountain Valley is accepting applications from volunteers to sit on city committees, commissions and boards.

This is a great opportunity to see how a city functions. It’s a great way to get educated about the city as well. Today, social media allows for a lot of misinformation to be out there. Here’s your chance to become more authoritative about how City Hall functions.

Applications are available in the city clerk’s office at City Hall, 10200 Slater Ave., and online at fountainvalley.org

Generally, appointments are for two-year terms. Candidates must be residents of Fountain Valley and age 18 or older. Deadline to submit an application to the city clerk is 5 p.m. Dec. 20.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission makes recommendations to the City Council regarding amendment or repeal of a Master Plan, development within the city, subdivision of land, blighted and substandard areas of the city, zoning and land use. The Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month in the City Council chambers.

Community Foundation

The Fountain Valley Community Foundation was organized for charitable purposes including soliciting, receiving, investing and making grants of funds, property and other resources, and to provide charitable services to aid, sponsor, promote, advance and assist worthy activities, programs and services in the city. Experience working with nonprofit organizations is desirable. The Fountain Valley Community Foundation meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month in the Senior Center conference room.

Housing & Community Development Advisory Board

The Housing and Community Development Advisory Board reviews the city’s Federal Block Grant Program and recommends housing/community development activities to the City Council. The board meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month in the City Council chambers.

Advisory Committee for the Disabled

The primary functions of the Advisory Committee for the Disabled are to help develop barrier-free access to buildings and facilities in the city; to provide people with disabilities information about recreation programs and disaster preparedness; develop community awareness of the employment potential for people with disabilities; and inform the community about the needs of the disabled population. The Advisory Committee for the Disabled meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of odd-numbered months in City Hall Conference Room 1.

Measure HH Oversight Committee

The purpose of the oversight committee is to review the city’s annual audited financial statement; mid-year budget report; and proposed annual General Fund Operating Budget in regard to the receipt and expenditure of the fiscal year’s 1 percent transactions and use (sales) tax revenue. The committee communicates its findings to the public and the City Council annually. Meetings are called as needed.
