Man injures hand after bowl of powder from fireworks explodes

by in News

A man severely damaged his hand after a bowl full of powder from fireworks exploded at his Fullerton home on Friday, Dec. 28.

The man, in his 40s, was talking with a friend in front of a fire pit in the backyard of his home in the 1200 block of West Chapman when the explosion occurred, said Fullerton police Lt. Tony Rios.

Fullerton Fire Department paramedics arrived on scene at about 6:50 p.m. and transported the man to a local trauma center.

Though he is expected to survive, the man sustained serious damage to his hand, Rios said.

Before the explosion, the man had taken apart some fireworks to pour the flammable powder inside a bowl, Rios said. The man was using the powder as fuel for the fire inside his fire pit. Officials believe flames from the fire pit may have ignited the powder, causing the bowl to explode in the man’s hand.

No structures were damaged and no additional individuals were hurt in the explosion.
