Orange County Sheriff’s deputy cut in altercation with inmate at Theo Lacy Jail

by in News

A deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department was treated for injuries after receiving a cut on the shoulder in a Saturday morning altercation with an inmate at Theo Lacy Jail.

Carries Braun, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department, said two deputies and a sergeant attempted to address an inmate who did not want to leave his cell to attend a disciplinary hearing on Saturday.

When the deputies entered the cell, the inmate attacked and attempted to stab one of them, Braun said. The attack left one of the deputies with a cut on the shoulder, which was later treated at a hospital.

Braun said the inmate would be identified by the department if he is charged with assault, and that the deputy was attacked with an object that was contraband and should not have been in the inmate’s possession.

“We will investigate to determine how it was obtained,” she added.
