Veteran Pacifica softball coach Mark Campbell is in intensive care at St. Jude Medical Center after becoming ill Sunday while coaching a 14-and-under game with the Batbusters travel team, Batbusters president Mike Stith confirmed.

“He’s in the fight of his life,” Stith said late Sunday night. “Everyone needs to pray for him and his family.”

Pacifica athletic director Dave Mamelli said Campbell coached the Mariners to a pair of victories Saturday at their Best of the West Tournament.

Campbell felt ill while coaching Sunday at La Mirada Regional Park and paramedics were called, Stith said.

“We’re all hoping and praying for the best possible outcome,” Mamelli said.

Campbell arrived at Pacifica — a traditional Orange County powerhouse in softball –  for the 2009 season as a highly-successful coach with Victory USA travel ball.

“He is probably one of the most well-respected coaches in the lower age groups in the travel ball circuit,” Marina co-coach Dan Hay said at the time.

Campbell was selected Orange County coach of the year in his first season and guided Pacifica to the CIF-SS Division 1 title in 2014.

The Mariners are ranked fifth in Orange County this season.
