Newport Beach Film Festival opens in red-carpet style

The red carpet was rolled out Thursday evening, April 25, for the 20th annual Newport Beach Film Festival, running through May 2.

About 60,000 film fans are expected to attend the eight-day festival, considered to be the largest international cinema event in Southern California. The festival showcases classic and contemporary filmmaking from around the world.

The program offers a wide selection of movies including family films, documentaries, music films, student work, environmental productions, action sports movies and shorts.

There also will be seminars and workshops and, of course, parties. The opening gala was Thursday at Fashion Island; a closing night party will be held at Via Lido Plaza.
