Hot and humid weather will linger in Southern California through Thursday

by in News

Southern Californians will swelter with humid, triple-digit temperatures in the valleys and inland areas through Thursday, with diminishing threats of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms in mountain and desert regions, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS issued a heat advisory for 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday for Inland counties, with highs forecast from 100 to 106 for Ontario, Riverside, San Bernardino, Perris and Hemet. The NWS issues such advisories when the temperatures are so hot that people can get sick.

There also will be a slight chance of Wednesday afternoon showers and thundershowers for some Inland areas, as well as the mountains of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

A high-pressure system will remain over the Four Corners region of the southwest, moving to the east later Thursday, the NWS’s Los Angeles office said. That eventually will give way to drier air, with a slow cooling trend.

But until it moves, the high-pressure system will continue pushing hot, humid weather into Southern California.

Other candidates for triple-digit temperatures in Southern California on Wednesday include the San Fernando, San Gabriel and Santa Clarita valleys, with highs forecast to range from 94 to 104; 90 to 100; and 98 to 102, respectively.

The San Gorgonio Pass area of Riverside County near Banning is forecast for highs from 105 to 110, the NWS said.

Downtown Los Angeles will be in the lower to mid-90s, and Orange County inland highs will range from 87 to 94. Coastal temperatures will be cooler with upper 70s to mid-80s at Los Angeles County beach areas and 79 to 84 at Orange County beaches

The NWS’ Phoenix office forecast that two of the threats from monsoon weather will diminish through Thursday, with minor threats of lightning and thunderstorm winds Wednesday for desert areas including Blythe and Joshua Tree National Park, going to a low-threat status for Thursday.

Dust storms, hail and flash-flood threats will be low for Wednesday and Thursday, NWS Phoenix said.

Tropical Storm Juliette is expected to increase southerly ocean swell by Wednesday night, with elevated surf of 3-5 feet or 4-6 feet likely to start Wednesday night, the NWS Los Angeles said.
