Body found of missing Huntington man who went hiking in Inyo National Forest

by in News

A person found dead in the eastern Sierra Nevada was confirmed Thursday as a Huntington Beach man who went missing after going on a hike in the Inyo National Forest last week, authorities said.

On the evening of Monday, November 4, authorities received a call about Alan Stringer, 40, who had planned on taking a hike out of the Bishop area one day earlier but never returned, the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office said.

Crews on the ground and in the air searched for Stringer, who authorities said was an experienced hiker. On Thursday, Sheriff’s officials said he was found on a glacier at the base of Mount Darwin. Details about how he died were not immediately released.

Stringer did not tell anyone his hiking plans or what routes he was going to take. He had recently bought an ice ax, crampons and had taken mountaineering courses, but was only equipped for hiking during the day. He carried with him a satellite communications device but it was never activated, Sheriff’s officials said. In recent days, temperatures in the area have dropped below freezing.

His car was found at North Lake shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Stringer’s cell phone activity showed he made one call early in the morning from downtown Bishop on Sunday.
