Man tries to assault deputy with scissors in Mission Viejo, authorities say, leads police on a freeway chase

A man suspected of trying to stab a sheriff’s deputy with a pair of scissors in Mission Viejo kicked off a vehicle chase along a freeway that ended with him giving up after a police dog bit him, authorities said.
It all started about 1 a.m. Thursday when a deputy was on patrol, checking on buildings that held businesses in the area of La Paz Road and Muirlands Boulevard. She noticed a suspicious man inside a vehicle and approached it.
The man got out and tried to stab the deputy with the scissors, then ran back to the vehicle and took off, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.
She was not injured and a pursuit began.
The California Highway Patrol was then notified that the Sheriff’s Department was chasing the suspect, CHP Sgt. Janelle Bautista said, and after the pursuit went along side streets it went onto the 5 Freeway and both agencies were after him.
The suspect, in a minvan, went north. At various points, spike strips were deployed.
“He sustained a flattened right, front wheel due to the spike deployment,” Bautista said.
He pulled into the Arco gas station at Katella Avenue and State College Boulevard in Anaheim and bailed from the car.
Officers looked for him and deployed a Tustin police dog, which found him, the sergeant said. The man finally surrendered near the back of the gas station’s store after being bitten by the dog.
He was taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and felony evading, sheriff’s officials said.
He was evaluated by medical staff and taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Department, which was handling the investigation.
