Man convicted of Garden Grove shooting death, Santa Ana attempted murder
A man who gunned down a man in Garden Grove and injured a 16-year-old during a separate shooting in Santa Ana was convicted Monday of murder.
An Orange County Superior Court jury also found Richard Adrian Trevino, 44, guilty of attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm, among other charges, for a pair of apparently unrelated shootings in 2016.
During Trevino’s trial, Deputy District Attorney Nick Thomo told jurors that when Trevino felt “disrespected” he “will not hesitate to take a life.”
On July 11, 2016, Trevino shot and injured a 16-year-old near Old McFadden and Cypress avenues, reportedly telling a witness “I’m sorry for disrespecting your neighborhood, but whoever disrespects me is going to get capped.”
A week later, Trevino got into an argument with Frank Brady in a parking lot outside a Garden Grove smoke shop, which ended with Trevino pulling a gun from his waistband. Trevino then “executed” Brady, the prosecutor said during the trial.
Bullet casings recovered by investigators linked the two shootings. The testimony of Erica Stone, who brought Trevino to the Garden Grove parking lot and served as a getaway driver after the shooting, tied Trevino to the slayings.
Trevino denied any role in the shootings.
Trevino’s attorney, Jeremy Goldman, told jurors during the trial that the only one to identify Trevino as the shooter was Stone, who saw a murder charge she was facing for Brady’s killing dropped in return for her cooperation.
Trevino is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on Nov. 15. He faces at least 75 years to life in prison.
