57 Freeway fully open after fire in Brea and Diamond Bar

Authorities closed part of the 57 Freeway for hours in Diamond Bar and Brea on Wednesday afternoon and evening because of a brush fire that had burned 16 acres.

The fire was reported around 11:50 a.m. on Brea Canyon Road and at one point was headed toward Orange County.

Firefighters stopped the brush fire from spreading at 1:05 p.m., said Marvin Lim, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman.

The cause of the fire was unknown.

The city of Brea tweeted around 3 p.m that the fire was 100 percent contained.

Although the California Highway Patrol initially said that the southbound 57 lanes at Brea Canyon Road would close, only the Brea Canyon off-ramp was closed on that side of the freeway.

But all lanes of the northbound 57 Freeway were shut down at Lambert Road. The carpool, No. 1 and 2 lanes were open by 2:38 p.m. Two other lanes remain closed. All northbound lanes were reopened open by Caltrans just before 5:45 p.m.

Four helicopters, two Super Scoopers and more than 100 firefighters responded.

By 1:13 p.m., the Super Scoopers had been released but two choppers remained, said Los Angeles County Fire spokesman Chris Thomas.
