Man charged in killing of his brother and sister-in-law in Alhambra apartment
A man suspected of killing his brother and sister-in-law in front of their 4-year-old daughter at an Alhambra apartment on Friday, Jan. 24, was charged with two counts of murder on Tuesday, officials said.
Sam Nhat Do, 42, faces two counts of murder with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders and one count of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to produce great bodily injury or death, said the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He appeared Tuesday at the Alhambra Courthouse, but his arraignment was continued to Feb. 26.
Armando Rodriguez, a public defender representing Do in court, did not immediately return requests for comment.
On the night of the shooting, Alhambra officers received a call of shots fired at the apartment just before 7:15 p.m. and arrived to find a man and woman with gunshot wounds in an apartment, said Alhambra police Cmdr. Gabriel Ponce.
Officers rendered emergency aid, but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, Ponce said.
While another officer drove to the scene, a man, later identified as Do, stopped the officer near Main Street and Second Street. Police said Do told the officer had had just shot two people in the apartment.
The officer arrested Do, who was later booked on suspicion of the killings.
Coroner officials later identified the victims as a married couple, Camha Nguyen Do, 38 and her husband Cuong Do, 44 who were both Anaheim residents.
Police said Cuong Do and Sam Do were brothers; Camha Nguyen Do was Sam Do’s sister-in-law. The Alhambra apartment belonged to the Do brothers’ parents.
Cuong Do died of multiple gunshot wounds, while Camha was shot in the head, according to a coroner’s report.
Prosecutors accused Do of shooting the couple while their 4-year-old daughter sat with them inside the apartment, but the child was not injured in the incident.
Detectives have not yet determined the motive in the killings.
