5 crashes send at least 5 to hospitals
At least five people were taken to hospitals in five traffic accidents over the weekend in San Clemente:
Sunday:
Midnight, Avenida Palizada and El Camino Real. At least one person suffered minor injuries and one person was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
6:10 a.m., 700 block of South El Camino Real. At least one person was hospitalized and a water main broke after a car rolled over.
11:16 a.m., 900 block of East Avenida Pico. A driver and at least two children were hospitalized for cuts and back pain.
Saturday:
10:30 a.m., 700 block of Calle Vallarta. At least one person was taken to a hospital after a car crashed into a light pole, knocking it down. City crews were called to fix the downed pole.
8:41 p.m., Calle Guadalajara and Calle Juarez. A man reportedly drove his car into a tree. Paul Josh Merkatz, a 32-year-old manager, was arrested in connection with the call and ordered jailed with bond set at $15,000.
