Yamaha Rhino Claims Life of Garden Grove Father
“Garden Grove man killed, 5 children injured in off-road crash”
A Garden Grove man who was not wearing a seat belt was killed in an off-road vehicle crash in Moreno Valley that injured five children including four of his own — under the age of 9, officials said today.
None of the passengers were wearing helmets and a 1-year-old was riding in his fathers lap, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Juan Carlos Camarillo, 31, was driving a Yamaha Rhino with the children on a hillside on Gilman Springs Road at 6:05 p.m. Monday, officials said. Camarillo tried to climb a steep hill with the vehicle when he lost control and it overturned, rolling down a sharp embankment, the CHP said.
Camarillo is the father of four of the children, according to a CHP press release showing similar addresses and last names of the children and the driver.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner said.
Christian Camarillo, 5, was critically injured with two broken arms and airlifted to a hospital, officials said.
Johnathan Camarillo, 8, had a broken left hand; infant Ethan Camarillo had cuts on his stomach; Desiree Camarillo, 4, had a broken left leg, and Marlene Maldonado, 8, complained of wrist pain, the CHP said. The children were transported to area hospitals, officials said.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known, CHP said.
After several fatal rollover accidents involving Yamaha Rhinos, the Consumer Products Safety Commission launched an investigation, prompting Yamaha in March to launch a voluntary repair program for the 450, 660 and 700 models and to voluntarily suspend sales of the vehicles until they were repaired, according to published reports.
