25 drivers cited for street racing

LAGUNA HILLS – Deputies clamped down on illegal street racing Thursday night, raiding what authorities called a meeting between dozens of drivers waiting to race.

About 25 drivers were cited for allegedly aiding and abetting a street race, said Lt. Jim England of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Another eight drivers were cited for illegal modifications to their exhaust.

“It’s a problem,” England said. “That’s why we jumped on it.”

About 10 patrol cars responded to Cabot Road and Oso Parkway at about 10 p.m. Thursday, where roughly 50 vehicles were gathered in a nearby parking lot, England said.

Several of the cars there drove from the area as patrol cars approached, he said, but deputies were able to stop several of the drivers and ticket them, he said.

Authorities did not disclose how deputies learned of the gathering.
