Cyclist dies after being hit by SUV

NEWPORT BEACH – A cyclist critically injured earlier this week while riding along a busy Newport Beach thoroughfare has died, police said Friday.

Irvine resident Donald Murphy, 49, died at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana Thursday, where he was taken following the accident on Jamboree Road near Ford Road.

Murphy on Wednesday was riding in a bike lane when Riverside resident Patricia Ann Izquieta made an “unsafe turning maneuver” and struck him, according to police.

Izquieta left the scene and was arrested a short time later on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, police said. “The (District Attorney’s) Office will be working with our investigators to determine if additional charges such as manslaughter will be filed,” Newport Beach police Sgt. Evan Sailor said.

Izquieta has posted bond and been released from county jail in Santa Ana.

A woman who answered the phone at Murphy’s home said the family could not immediately comment.
