A 1-year-old boy was hit and killed in the street by a pickup truck backing out of a nearby house a day after Christmas, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.

Officials said deputies responded on Wednesday at about 4:50 p.m. to the 4000 block of Casa Oro Drive in Yorba Linda. Once there, law enforcement officials found a child who had been hit by a truck in front of his residence.

“The child, an almost two-year-old boy, was hit by a vehicle backing out of a nearby home,” the Sheriff’s Department said on Twitter. “He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.”

Carrie Braun, spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said the boy was in the street when he was hit by the car, and the Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating where exactly the pickup was when it hit the boy.

It is not yet known whether the driver was impaired, but the driver remained at the scene of the crash and was questioned by investigators, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Braun said Casa Oro Drive would remain closed in the vicinity of the crash while the Sheriff’s Department investigates.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the child.
