Suspect in O.C. carjacking arrested in Arcadia after leading authorities on a pursuit in 3 counties

by in News

A carjacking suspect was arrested in Arcadia after leading authorities on a long pursuit through three counties Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The suspect was arrested after fleeing from the vehicle, a red minivan, following a collision on Foothill Boulevard and Baldwin Avenue in Sierra Madre. The suspect then walked onto the 210 Freeway using the onramp to the westbound lanes.

He then hopped the median, including two sets of Metro Gold Line tracks before California Highway Patrol officers caught up to him in the far right eastbound lane.

The suspect was wanted on suspicion of carjacking an elderly victim at the Katella Mobile Home Estates in Stanton about 1:30 p.m., said Carrie Braun, spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. A road rage incident preceded the carjacking, she said.

She did not know where the pursuit started, but said the Sheriff’s Department put out information about the red minivan, including the license plate, to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

At one point the vehicle was spotted in the Corona area, NBC Los Angeles reported.

It wasn’t immediately known which agency spotted the vehicle in Los Angeles County, but once spotted, the suspect led officers on a lengthy pursuit on the 10 and 210 Freeways. At some point, the rear bumper of the minivan was damaged. The suspect also had a close call after blowing a red light in Baldwin Park.

At one point, the suspect went into a residential neighborhood in Monrovia, got out of the minivan and appeared to enter a home. The suspect was then chased out by the homeowner, got back in the minivan and fled southbound toward Foothill Boulevard.

The suspect continued westbound on Foothill until traffic at a red light at Baldwin Avenue appeared to force him to stop. The suspect then tried to squeeze between two cars, but struck the vehicles and became wedged. He backed up and again rammed both vehicles before exiting the car and walking toward the freeway.
